Summary
Summary review written by our editors.

The Hoyt Concept X 40 LD is the long-draw specialist of the 2024 Concept target family, and it is defined by two deliberate choices: the longest riser Hoyt has ever built, and the HBX Gen 4 cam it substitutes for the family's SCTR system. Together they give a long-draw archer a 32.25 to 34-inch draw window and a genuine 360 fps by Hoyt's stricter ATA measurement - real speed at a draw the standard bows can't reach. It shares the family's best traits: wide TXL limbs that resist torque, a dead-in-hand shot, and class-leading finishes. In my experience the combination of an extra-long riser and a wide limb stance is what makes this bow so steady to hold, which for a long-draw competitor is the entire point. Hoyt has not widely published a US price for this special-order model; expect flagship target pricing in line with the standard Concept X 40. An excellent choice for the long-draw field and FITA archer who needs a bow that finally fits a 34-inch anchor; shorter-draw shooters should look at the Hoyt Concept X 40, and those wanting a dead single-cam hold at the same length should also consider the Mathews Conquest 4. In short, the Mathews Conquest 4 is a high end target bow with the long ATA and good brace height that is very capable of putting up great scores in stiff competition. Also one of Mathews' lightest competition rigs it isn't a bare to walk around the ranges all day. It is very customizable to the specific needs of most shooters; whether it is smooth drawing, fast shooting or forgiving as possible. A little on the noisy side but this bow is practically dead in the hand at the shot. With a good stabilizer this bow will become even more comfortable for most shooters and it is balanced very well at full draw so it won't take much before you can start pin-wheeling some targets. The BowTech Reckoning 38 is an awesome bow, with possibly the most and easiest adjustments ever designed into a compound bow. Any archer will appreciate the level of customization the 38 allows for, but the ease of making the adjustments is probably the best feature. No bow press, no fancy tools, just some Allen wrenches and a little knowledge on what each adjustment actually does, and shooters can be well on their way to perfectly customizing their new bow and how it feels during the draw cycle and after the shot. The price is competitive for a target bow, but it is far from cheap with an MSRP of $1699. Although many shooters at the target level are sponsored, those just getting started, or needing to purchase their own rigs need to save up or plan on winning a lot to help offset the cost of the bow. The Reckoning 38 is a little goofy looking, and could have some additional color options. However, other than those two minor issues, it is really hard to find anything that would keep a target shooter from buying the Reckoning 38. It is an awesome bow, a great shooter, and well worth the investment for any serious archer. Read full review...

Hoyt Concept X 40 LDMathews Conquest 4Bowtech Reckoning 38
Pros
  • Built for the long-draw archer the standard bows can't fit - a 32.25 to 34-inch draw on the longest riser Hoyt has ever made
  • The HBX Gen 4 cam drives a genuine 360 fps ATA at a 34-inch draw while still adjusting let-off across 65/70/75%
  • Wide TXL limb stance makes the bow physically hard to torque left or right, holding the pin steady at a long anchor
  • Dead-in-hand, low-vibration shot on an extra-long, extremely forgiving 40-inch platform
  • Hoyt's target coatings and ten riser colors carry over - the finish quality is among the cleanest in the category
  • A very forgiving bow
  • Pretty low amount of vibration in your hand
  • 3 different cams make this a very customizable bow
  • Conquest family has won more competitions than any other bow
  • All new target bow platform
  • Deadlock everything - cams, pockets, cable containment system
  • Tons of cam adjustability to make the bow exactly what shooters want
Hoyt Concept X 40 LDMathews Conquest 4Bowtech Reckoning 38
Cons
  • Its 32.25 to 34-inch draw window is built specifically for long-draw archers - shorter draws are better served by the standard Concept X 40
  • As a special-order long-draw bow it is less common on dealer shelves, so plan lead time and confirm availability before ordering
  • Choosing a cam can be a little bit confusing
  • Draw length is cam specific - new cam needed for each draw length
  • Lightest in the lineup but still feels a little bit heavy
  • Not the best looking bow
  • MSRP of $1699
