Editors' review

The Mathews Switchback XT is a superior quality bow from the Mathews Switchback series. This bow bridges the gap between the other two models in the series: the less forgiving and faster Mathews Swtichback and the slower but more forgiving Mathews Swtichback LD. The Switchback XT is a very quiet, compact, and forgiving bow. When it comes to shootability this rig is even smoother than the original legendary Switchback yet it still offers a great blend of speed, quietness, and forgiveness. A short 31" axle-to-axle length makes it the ideal bow for both tree stand hunting and blind hunting.

One of the best single cam bows

Many shooters agree the Switchback XT is a superior quality single cam bow. With a silky smooth draw cycle, this bow is considered to have a unique blend of smoothness, quietness, and speed. This bow has received a lot of great feedback and comments from shooters throughout the world.

Eccentric system

Mathew's Straightline XT Cam system is the driving force behind advertised IBO speeds reaching 315 fps. This is a non-modular cam system that requires different cams for individual draw lengths. Draw lengths are available from 25 to 30 inches in half-inch increments.

Draw cycle and shootability

Admittedly, The Switchback XT is one of the smoothest single cam bows out there. This is confirmed by many shooters with different level of expertise. This rig is easy to hold at full draw and is quiet on release. No other Mathews bow has received so much great feedback from shooters.

Silencing system / Quietness and vibration

According to our analysis, the vast majority of archers who shot this bow agree the Switchback XT is very quiet rig with little hand shock. The Switchback XT features a cable guard that is integrated with dampers to reduce noise and vibration. In addition, vibration and noise are further reduced with string suppressors and Harmonic Damping System.

Other recommendations

You may also want to consider the original Mathews Switchback which is faster yet a little bit less forgiving. On the other hand if you have a longer draw length (30"+) the Mathews Switchback LD would be a better choice.

Best all round bow that Mathews have produced todate, in my opinion.

Version: 2008 Mathews Switchback XT

Rating:

Pros: It's all round performance can't be bettered, in my opinion. Others will shoot faster and may be quieter but they wont better the Switchback XT overall performance. It's a class bow, period.

Cons: No cons. Some say the draw specific cam is a con but you should know your own draw length before buying any bow. The only possible disadvantage is if you decide to sell the bow and there's your first mistake!

I've shot Mathews bows for nearly 25 years now. Our bow shop was the first sole agent for Mathews bows in the late 1990's, when we introduced the fledgling Mathews bows to the South African market. I've hunted over 150 game animals with Mathews bows. In my opinion, of all the great Mathews bows I've had the priveledge to shoot, the Switchback XT is tops. I'm 64 now and only own one bow, guess which one!

Old Reliable

Version: 2008 Mathews Switchback XT

Rating:

Pros: Draw Cycle, Tuning

Cons: Speed Compared To Modern Bows.

Full review:

The XT was ment to be a "backup" bow for me. After a couple days at the range and some tuning it is now my primary treestand bow. I can draw it at any angle because the draw cycle is silky smooth. I never shoot this bow more than 40 yards at targets and 30 yards at game. But up to that 30 yards I trust it completely. I shoot a 480gr arrow at 64lbs and 29in draw and see speeds around 260fps using a 60X string. A mid Torqueless Grip would be a good update as the factory grip is not shaped very well for big hands.

I shoot it so good and it feels like a old friend very accurate

Version: 2007 Mathews Switchback XT

Rating:

Pros: Smooth easy to draw quite

Cons: I love everything about this bow NO down falls in my opinion

Full review:

Easy to tune shoot fixed broad heads unbelievably accurate easy to maneuver in a blind and tree stand shot a few turkeys with it and a beautiful buck that is on the wall I have owned new bows but keep going back to my Switchback XT I won’t ever get rid of it I’m 64 years old and just bought 50lb limbs and they still make them at Mathews had to go through a Mathews dealership to buy them I’m set till the end

Awesome bow !!!

Rating:

Pros: Everything

Cons: None I could find

Full review:

I bought the bow brand new and they just come out with the new 2018 bow and I still see no need to upgrade because in my opinion Mathews hasn't made a better bow than the Switchback XT to date! I got my bow and it pulled 74 lb out of the box then after set up and twisting the cables to the right axle to axle length by the tech it shot 321 fps. with a 75 grain field point and a 27 inch arrows 29 inch draw. Myself or the tech couldn't believe how fast this bow shoots and it is silky smooth to draw with no felt recoil I added a Mathews string stop since I bought it but that's it. My friend has a Halon 32 and my bow shoots right with his so I see no need to buy a new one until Mathews comes up with something so innovative that my XT can't compete!

Amazing bow for hunter class competition, IBO, and hunting

Version: 2008 Mathews Switchback XT

Rating:

Pros: Smooth, quiet, stable, maneuverable

Cons: Not as fast as other competition bows

Full review:

I hunt, instruct and compete in IBO. This was the first bow I ever took to a real competition and into the field, and it's never let me down even 7 years later. I have a Hoyt Pro Comp Elite and I shoot in a different class now, but the Mathews is still my go-to bow for fun shoots, IBO and hunting. It's super comfortable in the hand, not too heavy, and it's ultra quiet in the forest. You will never regret buying this bow, or "outgrow" it. When my students ask why I still shoot it, I tell them that the Hoyt is my fancy "techy" bow, but the Mathews is an old friend.

This bow is amazing. Smooth, fast short bow to move around in a tree stand.

Version: 2006 Mathews Switchback XT

Rating:

Pros: I like almost everything about this bow. It has good speed, very accurate, light. Awesome hunting bow.

Cons: Non adjustable draw weight.

Full review:

I have been bow hunting for 50 years and have owned Bear, P.S.E. Hoyt and this Mathews bow is the best ! I love it and can't believe this bow is 10 years old already. I replaced the string and cables last year, so it should last another 10 years! Do yourself a favor, shoot a Mathews first!. World class operation. Their quality won't let you down.

Amazing Bow

Pros: Forgiving, Quiet, Silky Smooth draw

Cons: A tad heavy

Full review:

I love my Switchback XT. My daughter has a Mission Craze and we were out shooting one day at the range and she challenged me to take a 60yd shot at a clay pigeon sitting in front of the hay bail. I gladly accepted, knowing that I had never tried a shot that far out at a very small target, but I had to show her to always be confident. I do believe in "aim small miss small" but at 60yds that clay pigeon was a very daunting target. I hit it on the third shot! I impressed myself. I shoot it with an 7 Pin IQ sight with Retina lock on a Muzzy Xcelerator drop away rest. I have nothing bad to say about the Switchback XT. The draw is as smooth as silk, nice solid wall, mine has the 65% let off and I can hold for quite a while without fatigue or creep. Everything about this bow is perfect! I also have a Mathews Creed XS and a Bear Carnage, I had a Bear Motive 6 (all reviewed on here as well). I just can't imagine not having my SBXT.

Great bow. Smooth draw and quiet dead in hand.

Version: 2008 Mathews Switchback XT

Rating:

Pros: Very smooth cam. Pulling back the draw fills a whole lot smoother then my DXT bow. Wished I bought the switchback xt . Sold my DXT. now have a switchback xt. Love this bow. This bow is a dream to shoot . It is very accurate. Quiet and dead in hand.

Cons: The bow is a little to heavy.

Full review:

The bow is very accurate and smooth draw and quiet. A great bow from Mathews. The bow is dead in hand after the shot. The bow is easy to set up. This bow haves a great brace height of 7.5 inches. This helps the bow give the shooter better forgiveness how the bad shot. Just a great bow for the beginner or pro shooter.

Best Bow ever produced hands down!

Version: 2006 Mathews Switchback XT

Rating:

Pros: Great looking bow, silky smooth draw cycle, little to no vibration, plenty fast enough to harvest any animal in North America. Smooth, smooth, smooth!!

Cons: A bit on the heavy side.

Full review:

I currently own a Z7 Extreme and love shooting it, but the first and hands down best Mathews Ive ever shot... the Mathews Switchback XT!! I shot 7 deer over the span of 3 years with that bow and only shot at 8! It was the hunters error on the one I missed, not the bows. I suggest to any hunter just entering the archery world to try out a variety of different bows but once you shoot the Switchback XT you will probably end your search right then and there.

Mathews Switchback XT is an awesome bow

Version: 2008 Mathews Switchback XT

Rating:

Pros: Smooth, very smooth, also very quiet

Cons: Have to change cams to adjust

Full review:

Haven't shot bow in 5 or 6 years. Thinking of getting back into bow hunting so I bought a switchback xt from a friend boy am I glad I did. Being an older bow already it is a total upgrade from my 20 yr old bow. It is so smooth, quiet, and pretty accurate. I'm shooting 256fps itsn't the fastest bow but it's not slow either. Shot a couple of 3D leagues and it performs just as good if not better than some of the newer bows. This bow is so nice I won't be buying a new one anytime soon.

Great shooting Bow.

Version: 2006 Mathews Switchback XT

Rating:

Pros: Smooth draw, easy to move around in a tree stand.

Cons: Really dont have any Cons.

Full review:

I've been shooting bows for many years but once I purchased my XT in 2007, I have never thought about changing to something else. The single cam has made it very smooth to pull back and with the size of the bow, it's easy to handle in a treestand from a space standpoint.

Sweet bow ahead of its time.

Version: 2008 Mathews Switchback XT

Rating:

Pros: Everything the bow is awesome one of the best hunting bows.

Cons: No cam adjustment

Full review:

I've had a few bows and the switchback is one of my favorites can't shoot it enough. Mathews bow seem to be ahead of there time for the age of the bow it keeps up and or passes some of the newer bows in its class. Awesome bow couldn't ask for more out of it.

great bow

Version: 2007 Mathews Switchback XT

Rating:

Pros: Easy smooth draw, compact, quiet, holds good on target, did I say smooth draw?

Cons: doesn't shoot 900 fps

Full review:

Great bow, smooth, quiet, well balanced, short, plenty fast. If you want to brag on speed you lose brace height or the roundness (hence smooth draw) of the cam or both. It depends what you prefer. Great shooter.

This was my first and by far the best Mathews bow I've owned.

Version: 2006 Mathews Switchback XT

Rating:

Pros: It was smooth, quiet, very well balanced bow. Was a dream too shoot this bow, I spent countless hours shooting this bow

Cons: The cam is draw length specific, you are unable to adjust the draw without changing out the cam.

Full review:

This was my first Mathews bow and is ranked by far the best bow that I have owned, it's a smooth drawing bow that needs no silencing added, it's a dead shot in the hand no felt recoil or vibration. The only downside to the bow is you can't adjust the draw length, but the bow is a dream to shoot and I sometimes could not find enough time too shot. Overall this is a well balanced hunting and spot or 3-D shooting bow.

Great bow. One of mathews best!

Version: 2006 Mathews Switchback XT

Rating:

Pros: Holds well on the shot. Smooth draw cycle. Very accurate. Shoots like a longer ATA bow.

Cons: The speed can be a factor if that takes priority over smooth and quiet.

Full review:

In the top two or three in my opinion of all the mathews bows. It is a great tree stand bow and shoots like it is longer than it is. Very smooth, accurate, and no noise or vibration. It was second behind the switchback of all the mathews bows I have owned. And only because I shoot longer ATA bows and prefer the switchback.
